Reality in the Making: Virtual Reality vs. Augmented Reality

Albert Einstein once said “reality is merely an illusion.” While that is still up for debate, many major tech companies are trying to break down the barrier between digital and real everyday and make their own illusory realities. The emerging tech space is beginning to host a variety of different technologies from virtual reality to augmented reality.

To better make sense of this new emerging tech, we at QSS Technosoft want to help you understand what could only be found in sci-fi movies years ago.

WHAT IS VIRTUAL REALITY (VR)?

Virtual reality is the most common term out of the emerging technologies, and is most commonly defined as the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment.

Virtual reality refers to a completely artificial reality. Your eyes are positioned in a simulated environment, and if you look around, it is as if you stepped into a completely different world.

The idea behind VR tech is to create a world that is so interactive and engaging that it tricks the user’s brain into believing they are in an alternate reality. If the user’s head moves, the graphics and sounds correspondingly react.

From high-end devices such as the Oculus Rift to cardboard cutouts that allow you to use your phone, there are many different ways to view Virtual Reality. While there are cheap options out there, the more expensive equipments allows you to simulate a more real environment.

For example, Everest VR allows a user to have the experience on what it feels like to climb Mount Everest, but in order to have the experience, one must have access to the necessary equipment.

WHAT IS AUGMENTED REALITY (AR)?

While VR allows you to step into a new world, AR allows you to enhance the version of reality you are currently in. AR is most commonly used in apps on tablets and smartphones, as it uses your devices camera to show you a layer of information on top of the real world you live in.

Take the picture above for example. You can use your phone or tablet to show what a new piece of furniture would look like in any room of your house. It saves you the hassle of wondering what it would look like bringing it to life right before your eyes.

Although AR is currently limited to our smartphones and tablets, in the next five years “smart glasses” will transcend the future of augmented reality as technology advances.
