Most lab information management systems work well inside the lab. The trouble starts where they meet everything else: the analyzer, the EHR, the billing system and the clinician waiting for a result. That is where our work starts, and it carries through to the sample, the QC run and the signed report.

CHALLENGES LABS FACE
Labs rarely fail on the science. They lose time on the handoffs: the mislabeled tube, the analyzer result typed in by hand, the order that never arrived from the EHR, the QC failure nobody saw until the inspection. Here is where we see labs get stuck, and how we get them unstuck.
Barcode labels at collection, scan-in at every handoff and a full chain-of-custody log with location, temperature and user for each specimen and aliquot.
Bidirectional analyzer interfaces over ASTM, HL7 and POCT1-A, directly or through instrument middleware, with host query so worklists download automatically.
HL7 ORM/OML order and ORU result interfaces and FHIR R4 APIs to the EHRs your clients use, with LOINC-coded results and a portal for practices that have no interface.
QC capture from the analyzer, Levey-Jennings charts and configurable Westgard rules that hold patient results when a run fails, with corrective actions logged.
Immutable audit trails, electronic signatures, document control and competency records built to the evidence CLIA, CAP and ISO 15189 assessors ask for.
A modern, cloud-ready platform built or extended around your workflows, with phased data migration from the legacy system and no gap in testing.
OUR SERVICES
A new LIMS, an extension to the one you run, or the interfaces that connect it to everything else. We build all three, for clinical and research labs.
Custom LIMS software development
A laboratory information management system designed around how your lab actually works, from accessioning to sign-out, for a single hospital lab, a multi-site reference lab or a research facility. Configurable tests, panels and workflows, so lab staff change the rules without a developer.
Sample tracking, storage and chain of custody
Full visibility of every specimen from collection to disposal, including aliquots, pooled samples and long-term storage, with the custody record forensic, toxicology and research work depends on.
Analyzer and instrument integration
Results flow straight from the instrument to the LIMS and worklists flow back, across chemistry, hematology, immunoassay, coagulation, urinalysis, microbiology and molecular platforms.
EHR, HIS and reference-lab integration
Electronic orders in and structured results out, to and from the hospitals, practices and partner labs you serve, built on an interface engine so each new client is configuration, not a project.
Quality control, compliance and audit
The quality system built into the LIMS rather than kept beside it, so QC, competency and documentation evidence is produced as the lab works.
Billing, outreach portals, analytics and modernization
The commercial side of the lab and the systems around it: getting paid for every test, serving outreach clients well, and replacing or extending what you run today. We also extend and connect existing lab information management systems when a full replacement isn't the right call.
A LIMS is judged on the joins: the analyzer that uploads without a retype, the EHR order that arrives complete, the QC failure that holds a result, the audit trail an inspector accepts. QSS builds lab software on the interoperability and compliance backbone we have engineered for healthcare clients for 16+ years.

Faster, safer result release
Lab records are inspected, subpoenaed and audited more often than almost any other health data. We design every LIMS to the regulations and accreditation standards your lab works under, and can show you how, control by control.
Time-stamped, unalterable records of every create, change and delete, with reason codes and electronic signatures aligned with 21 CFR Part 11.
Every specimen handoff recorded with user, location, time and condition, from collection to disposal.
Review and sign-out rules, critical-value documentation and versioned corrected reports, so the original and the amendment are both on record.
QC, proficiency testing, maintenance, calibration and competency records kept with the results they support, and retention rules configured per record type.
AES-256 at rest and TLS 1.2+ in transit for results, images, interfaces and backups.
Multi-factor authentication, role-based access for phlebotomists, technologists, pathologists, billing and clients, and automatic session timeouts.
HIPAA-eligible environments on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud with BAAs in place, or on-premise; high availability, backups and tested disaster recovery.
Validation documentation (requirements, test scripts and traceability) to support your system validation, plus third-party vulnerability assessments and penetration tests tracked to closure.
Best for a defined launch. A set scope, such as an analyzer interface set, an outreach portal or an MVP, with fixed price, milestone-based delivery and a clear go-live date.
Best for an ongoing platform. Named engineers, interface analysts and QA who work as an extension of your lab IT team.
Best when you want to own the capability long term. We build and run the team and platform, then transfer both to you on an agreed timeline.
We choose the stack for your lab's requirements, not the other way round. These are the standards, platforms and tools our healthcare teams use most for lab software.
Every lab is scoped to its tests, instruments and clients, but buyers deserve a straight answer. These are typical ranges based on our delivery history and current market rates.

A laboratory information management system is the software that runs a lab's day: it records orders, tracks each sample from collection to disposal, sends worklists to analyzers and collects their results, applies QC and review rules, and releases signed reports to the EHR, the patient and the billing system. It also keeps the audit trail, QC and document records that CLIA, CAP and ISO 15189 inspections rely on.
It depends on the number of tests, instruments, sites and integrations. As a guide, an interface set or a single module costs $20,000–$60,000, an MVP for one lab $85,000–$200,000, and a multi-site enterprise platform $250,000–$600,000 or more. You leave the discovery call with a range specific to your scope.
An interface set or focused module takes 6–12 weeks, an MVP for one lab 3–6 months, and a multi-site platform 6–12 months. Validation, data migration and parallel running are included in those timelines, because a lab can't stop testing while it switches systems.
A commercial LIMS is the faster route if its standard workflow fits your lab and you accept its license model and roadmap. A custom laboratory information management system makes sense when your workflows, test menu or client services are how you compete, when you need integrations the product doesn't support, or when per-user fees at scale cost more than owning the platform. Many labs do both: keep a commercial core and build the portal, interfaces or modules it lacks. We can help you decide in the discovery call.
Yes. We build bidirectional analyzer interfaces over ASTM, HL7 and POCT1-A, directly or through instrument middleware, and EHR interfaces using HL7 ORM/OML orders, ORU results and FHIR R4 APIs, usually on Mirth Connect or Iguana. Results are coded in LOINC so they file correctly in Epic, Oracle Health, Meditech and other EHRs.
A laboratory information system (LIS) traditionally serves clinical labs and is patient-centered: orders, results, reports and billing. A LIMS was traditionally sample-centered and used in research, pharma and public-health labs, with more focus on batches, storage and QC. Today most lab information management systems cover both, and the right choice depends on whether your work is driven by patient orders, by studies and samples, or by both.
Yes. Not every lab needs a replacement. We connect existing lab information management systems to new analyzers, EHRs and reference labs, add outreach portals, dashboards or billing modules around them, and modernize the parts that hold the lab back.
The software produces the evidence assessors ask for as the lab works: QC and corrective-action records, proficiency testing, instrument maintenance, staff competency, document control, versioned corrected reports and a complete audit trail. The lab holds its own CLIA certificate and accreditation; our job is to make the records complete and easy to retrieve. ISO 15189:2022 is now the only version accreditation bodies assess against, and its risk-based requirements are built into how we design QC and nonconformance workflows.
For labs that need it, such as clinical-trial central labs and labs working with pharma sponsors, we build time-stamped, unalterable audit trails, unique user accounts, electronic signatures linked to their records, and validation documentation. Part 11 compliance also depends on your lab's procedures, so we provide the evidence that supports your validation.
Each specimen gets a barcode or RFID label at collection and is scanned at every handoff: courier, receipt, processing, aliquoting, testing and storage. The system records who held it, where, when and in what condition, and tracks storage down to freezer, rack, box and position, so any sample can be found and its history shown in seconds.
Yes. QC results are captured from the analyzer, plotted on Levey-Jennings charts and evaluated against the Westgard rules you select. A failed run holds the related patient results automatically until a technologist reviews it and records the corrective action.
Yes. We build CPT and ICD-10 coding, medical-necessity checks, X12 837 claims and 835 remittance, eligibility checks and client billing for outreach accounts, or connect the LIMS to the RCM system you already use.
Yes. Client portals let practices order tests, print requisitions and labels, track specimens, receive results and request supplies, which helps outreach programs serve clients that have no EHR interface.
Yes. We build electronic laboratory reporting (ELR) to state and local public health agencies using the HL7 v2.5.1 ELR format with LOINC and SNOMED CT coding, plus submitter portals and surge workflows for public health labs.
In phases, without a gap in testing: data audit and mapping, migration of patients, orders, results, QC history and stored-sample locations, verification against the source, and a parallel run before cutover. Historical results stay retrievable for your record-retention period.
Both work. Cloud hosting on AWS, Azure or Google Cloud with a BAA gives multi-site access and lower infrastructure effort; on-premise suits labs with strict data-residency rules or heavy local instrument traffic. Many labs choose cloud for the application with a local interface service for the analyzers.
To flag unusual results and QC drift for review, forecast workload and turnaround, and read paper requisitions into draft orders. A technologist or pathologist stays in control of every result released, and every AI suggestion is logged in the audit trail.
